Douglass

I have always admired Frederick Douglass. he is an inspiration for many who just can't seem to see past their unfortunate situations. First of all, I found it interesting and pretty sad that he had been criticized because he was born a free slave. Just because slavery had been over, does not mean that at that very moment, Blacks were treated equally. He still went through hardships and had obstacles to overcome and was not far from understanding the slave mentality. He lacked an identity like all of the other slaves and had to build something from [having] nothing. Second, his "thank you" to Mr. and Mrs. Auld was one of many areas in his book that touched me. I can understand his gratefulness towards Mrs. Auld for teaching him how to read. On the same note, I found his feelings towards Mr. Auld to be heartfelt. Instead of holding anger for Mr. Auld, he thanks him for giving him the motivation to want to learn how to read. For me, I look at it as, instead of holding hate towards the one who has sought out failure for you, you turn their words around as a way to push yourself into being more than they would ever imagine.
