Wife Of Bath

The Wife of Bath was one of my favorite Chaucer tales. "Authority vs. Experience" is the argument for who the Wife of Bath is. She challenges the church's authority and what is acceptable behavior from a woman. While the church might have viewed her five marriages as distasteful and contrary to sacred values, she made the conscious decision of living her life through experience. She made a good point about how the church makes up these rules on marriage yet, for the most part...no nothing of the subject at hand. While it is important to obtain and practice one's values, it is also important to follow your heart and make your own experiences to live and learn from...as what the Wife of Bath did.

While I also enjoyed the tale of the man's journey, I did not feel one bit sorry for him. I don't think it was fair for him to have done what he did, and in the end get to spend his life with a beautiful and loyal wife. I wonder if in those days, how different would it have been for a woman who did something just as worst.
