I actually think that the pardoner's repetition of "greed is the root of all evil" is his way of waving his own corruption away. It's the equivalent of someone holding a lit cigarette and, after taking a drag, saying "smoking kills".
I also think that pardoner is similar in character to the friar, although I am not sure which of those two is the worse (we'll probably discuss that in class).
