Pardoner's Tale

I found our class discussion today very interesting. It's disturbing how the Pardoner can preach about greed and yet rob even the most destitute individuals. He seems like a sociopath with no conscience at all. I didn't realize how many intriguing questions could be asked upon reading the tale, and I found the class to be enlightening. The fact that the Pardoner tells a story about the negatives of greed brought up the question of whether or not a greedy person can tell a moral story. In my opinion, anyone can tell a moral story, but if the person telling the story is immoral, the message often doesn't hold any weight. No one wants to be preached to by a person who doesn't practice what they preach. Also, because the Pardoner appears to be boasting about his actions and is essentially a condemned man, makes him seem cruel and evil, in a scary sort of way, in my opinion.

I'd understand where you are coming from, Holly. But I also disagree with what you are saying about a person who is considered to be immoral being able to give a moral message. I actually think that who have been through bad experiences in their lives have more to tell than someone who may have been good all of their lives, and even they are not perfect. Maybe the Pardoner is telling a powerful message here: Don't be like me, rather be better! The fact that he knows he is doing wrongly things is powerful enough because he is admitting it!
