Douglass

I haven't read a narrative like this about slavery before. The way Douglass portrayed the beatings and violence was extremely graphic. It never occurred to me the real hardships and cruelty that the slaves experienced. I never knew that the slaves were traded among the slave owners so often. It was interesting to see how Douglass learns to read and write. His determination to run away was so compelling yet exciting-for me at least.

Douglas is one of the most inspiring writers from that time period, in my opinion. PERSEVERANCE is the first word I think of when I think of him.
