Estella
I know that, despite her cold heart, we are made to sympathize with Estella, because she is taught by Miss Havisham to break hearts and to be cold. Despite this logic, I really don't like her at all. I can't feel sorry for her because she is just so cold throughout. And I know that it was because of her upbringing and all of that, but I have known many people as well, who have been brought up in a similar way and do not act as Estella does. I think I really need someone to explain to me and just to sell me on being sympathetic towards her character, because I just don't feel it. She tells Pip that she would hurt him, and warns him continually, but I just don't see how her upbringing can be used as a cop out to be rude to everyone and look down on them. Can anyone sell me on sympathy for her?

I guess I would say that if Pip is a product of his upbringing then she is too. They are both shaped by adult desires and it leads both of them to behave in unworthy ways. As an adult, Estella is cold but does not treat Pip with the contempt that she did as a little girl--she does warn him. Pip seems to have his eyes open to an extent in his obsession with her; he is either unable or unwilling to pull back. I guess I don't think we can lay what happens to him at her door. I think she is quite damaged, and ends up hurting herself as much as she does him--and like him she grows into regret and repentance.
i understand what you think about her, but then again, sometimes i feel as though she is a robot specifically sent on Mrs. Havisham's wills, so she is just doing what she is told. it is unfortuinate for her, because she never realy can grow into her own and what she believes in herself
i also agree the Estella has a cold heart and only does what she is told. but she is now an adult and should no from right from wrong. even thought that she is told to do these things i think that she take a joy out of it in hurting people feelings and for that i don't really like her character.
