great expectations

todays discussion in class really pinpointed what we love about fairy tales and people who have to struggle to make it in life. pip had nothing growing up and was subjected to his sister's violent behavior and we would have thought that thats what he was going to be doing for the rest of his life. he had a "life sentence" to being a blacksmith until this unknown benefactor changed his life. by giving him money, he also gave him a new personality, one who was embarassed of his roots and of the people he associates with. this is true of many people who strike gold and dont k now how to handle it, but despite this, im still rooting for Joe to realize that what is most imporatnt are his roots, because without the past there wouldnt be a future!
