repression

pip had a sense of repression towards his past that would not leave him alone. this was allthanks to that one night that he helped out that convict, and so he blamed himself for his involvement in criminality. he always tried to hide this and suppress it, but it came back one night to haunt him, when theconvict came back and opened that door that pip was trying so hard to keep shut. from here we learn a valuable lesson about life, we must end things because if not they will torture us!

You are totally right about having closure in life. And that is hard to do especially when you are so attached to something that is dear to you and that it is hard let go. In Pip's case, he has had a pretty rough life and child abuse it's something that one cannot forget so easily. It's a painful process to get through and leave behind.

I think that this was one of Pip's flaws. He didn’t have the warmth and support of a family and the healthy relationship of a family (he did have Joe). He never learned to express his frustrations, make mistakes and not feel guilty and share his emotions. He kept everything inside. I think his abusive sister caused a lot of trauma. Joe was an excellent role model but the damage was already done. Pip never let go. Whether it was "stealing food" or Estella there was always something he was repressing.
