Frederick Douglass

I've read this narrative before, but we never discussed the work in terms of how it was written. I've always found it, and still do, a very heartwrenching account of the effects of slavery. However, I love how Douglass is so eloquent and fights back against his slave owners with intelligence, cleverly twisting around arguments to show the indecency of the slave owners to slaves. He makes the slaveholders look ignorant, even moreso than they were. He holds himself at a higher level, not using profanity or unfair judgements on all people. He is feet, yards, miles, higher than any slave owner and he makes them look worse than dirt. They deserve this and I believe Douglass' work is very successful and I admire him greatly.

i have to say i agree with you, i believe i had read this book in high school but i don't really remember going in terms of how it was written. Douglass was very brave to fight back for his life and to show the readers how a slave owner was and how they were so wrong to treat another human being the way they did. i have to say i really enjoyed reading the stroy of F. Douglass.
