great expectations
I didnt read the whole book yet, only about 1/3 so far. Pip is an orphan and he lives with his older sister and her husband, Joe. Joe seems to be about the only person Pip likes. Sometimes it looks like Pip doesn't like people all that much in general. I know most of his relatives and other characters do not seem to be good characters, but they are described from Pip's subjective point of view. He always refers to a person's appearance as one of the main factors he uses to judge them. Red face, looks like fish, etc.. Could be that it's only because he's still immature. He also finds it relatively easy to suppress his conscience about stealing or lying, Joe being an exception. But then , Estella treats him even worse than everybody else, but because she's good looking, he cannot develop any negative feelings towards her for that.

Well, the explanation that Pip does not like people is that, society has rejected him (as other orphans). So he is hostile towards others sometimes.
And yes he is probably judging other people by their appearance, because he is still a child. That is how most of children or probably all do.
