I never really paid attention to why so many novels were written about orphans. But then again, they were usually the most interesting for me. When I read the opening paragraph, before we discussed it in class, I didn't think that Pip created his own identity. I, being a speech major, thought he wasn't able to pronounce Phillip and therefore said Pip, which is easier. Young kids often create new words that parents use. I call my brother Jerry because I wasn't able to say Jeremy when I was younger. Now people call him Jerry. I didn't really create his identity.
Another thing, why did Pip go back and bring the convict the food and other stuff he asked for? Instead of helping the convict, why didn't he just forget about him altogether? It's not like he followed him home. It just seems odd and allows us to see that Pip is kind and has a generous heart.
Don't we all have certain expectations of people?

Well, that's a good point. We all have certain expectations of people. And that kind of prevents us sometimes from getting to know people from who they really are. Sometimes we expect too much from people and we also expect the wrong things. We should be careful about the assumptions we make about others because the world does not revolve around our personal views. This world has people with different values, experiences, ideas and beliefs.
we all have great expectations of people, but we have to know that we cant let that get the best of us, because that is also what lets us down!
