Emerson

I really enjoyed reading Emerson's Self-Reliance. He says it like it is. I think that he makes valid arguments such as: "Imitation is suicide", "Envy is ignorance" and "Trust thyself". Everyone is a conformist in some sort of way. I agree with Emerson in that conformity destroys uniqueness. But there are no two completely alike people. He says that everyone comes from a certain place and we should try to be our own person. He didn't live in today's world, where most of the things that characterize us have to do with money and materialism. Everyone tries to conform to something and trying to be a noncomformist is extremely hard in my opinion.

Isn't it interesting how even though Emerson is not alive, his ideas are still present with us today? I feel this way about all of the authors we have been reading thus far. Their works of literature can applicable to our society today. Their ideas really makes us think critically about who we are, what we can do this make ourselves better as well as society, and what we in reality in relationship with each other and the environment around us.

I agree. Many of the works we have read can be relevant and seen through society today. They have each generated ideas that are so real because they are so relatable to many of us. And the fact that many of these literary works were created in times that in which they were seen as contentious, makes each of them unique and non-conformists as Emerson would say.
