The End of Hamlet.

What a tragic and sad ending! I never expected Hamlet or Ophelia to die in the end. But I also think that Shakespeare couldn't be any more genious in ending the play this way. I never read Hamlet before this class and I am so pleased about having been exposed to such level of literature. Although it was hard to read at times, class discussions have been so helpful in helping me understand the different themes. What amazed me the most about Hamlet was the fact that it was written many years ago, yet the different messages in the play are still alive with us today. Ideas such as greed, power, jealousy, and reveange don't away even though societies change. As discussed in class, fiction is more than just a story-telling: It's a portrayal of different societies at particular times.

i agree with fior, in class we dig so deep ini the story of hamlet and we uncover so many secrets of love, deception, jealousy, and many more characteristics that years later are still going on with us now!

Yes I agree with you both, that Hamlet is a great work of literature, and the class discussions really help us to understand and look deeper into the works.

I think that the way the Shakespeare ended the story is how many writers leave you with a thought? Was Hamlet a good spirited person, or was he miserable like his uncle? I would say that he was both? Because he really did kill a lot of people which was unnecessary to take a reveange at his uncle.

Shakespeare is a genius and Hamlet is my favorite of his works. I agree with Jehona about leaving the reader with decisions to make about the characters. I don't think Hamlet intentionally killed all those people. In my opinion they needed to die. They all treated him like crap and plotted against him. Show the Prince some respect.

I definatly agree!! who would have thought that Ophelia would kill herself?! Thats so depressing. I feel so bad for Hamlet. He really had such a tragic life and his life just never gets any better! I also agree that all those people that Hamlet murdered deserved to die!

I also agree with Fior that the ending of Hamlet was very tragic. I think all of us expected that Hamlet wasn't going to die in the end being that he was the main character(if looking from a Disney movie standpoint where the movies are finished with a happy ending).

It is sad that the ending was tragic but it is the fact that it is tragic that it is so memorable. Would romeo and juliet have been nearly as memorable or have as profound an effect on us if they both had lived happily ever after?
