Water and Suicide

Why does Shakepseare use water as a vehicle for Ophelia's suicide? Perhaps water sybolizes purity. It allows one to reflect and it allows one's true face to be exposed. Ophelias use of water to relate to her final message: nothing stays hidden forever. The truth will eventually come out. Ophelias pure nature was forced to conform, just like water conforms to its container / environment, to her father's will. Another symbolic reason for the water was therefore inorder for her to ask Hamlet for his forgiveness on her betrayal, unwillingly of course.

I never thought about the symbolism of water as the tool of Ophelia's death. The fact that water "conforms" to its container makes an excellent comparison to the behavior of Ophelia throughout the play.
