great expectations
I liked our in-class analysis of the title. I know we discussed the title in terms of what we want for ourselves - our basic needs and our dreams. After class, though, I thought about the title as it applies to the characters in the story. What are Pip's great expectations? He doesn't seem to have any expectations, because he is not accustomed to getting what he expects - he merely gets whatever others are willing to give him. Joe too has no great expectations, but at least he has control over his own situation - he could leave Mrs. Joe if he wanted, but he has his own reasons for not doing so. Mrs. Joe and Uncle Pumblechook have the expectation that all those around them will act in a way they approve of. Miss Havisham's expectations are morbid and desperately sad, and Estella's expectations...well, I don't know what they are yet, though perhaps I ahevm'tread far enough.
