Self -reliance

I agree with what Emerson writes about in terms of envy. It is very important for every indivisual to be themselves and to be original. He says that Envy is ignorant. This is very true. When someone gets jealous of someone else they strive and strive to get what the other person has. They always feel that the grass is always greener on the other side. By doing this they are a failure in becoming their own person and bringing out their indivisuality. They are just immitating what someone else is. One of my favorite songs, The sunscreen song, says "Dont waste your time on jealousy; sometimes youre ahead, sometimes youre behind...the race is long, and in the end its only with yourself". I think this has a lot to do with what Emerson writes on jealousy.

Lorraine, I like your reference to the song. I agree that at the end of the day you are only competing against yourself. You have to be an individual to get somewhere in life, because if you arent then you will just blend into the crowd.

I understand your point, but at the same time, I find it very hard to define "originality" and "individuality" because we are who we are because of the environment and people around us. How much of us is truly us and how much of us is learned? So for me, its not about being an individual, its about being exposed to as many different experiences as possible in order to form that more objective and "true self": by seeing all the options out there.

Lorraine I agree with your "grass is greener comment" and Svetlana I agree with you as well. Experiences help shape who we are and of course by even having those experiences we conform to something.
