Finishing up Coleridge

Today's discussion really opened my eyes to Coleridge's impact on the way we think today. The idea that words like 'enthusiasm' and 'imaginative' were ever negatively connotated surprised me, and I understand why Kubla Khan changed that view. I think it is sad, though, that despite having created such an awesome work, Coleridge still felt the need to allude to what he couldn't accomplish: the 300-line piece from his vision.

Baudelaire doesn't sit well with me - but perhaps that is because the move from smooth, musical Wordsworth and forecful but melodic Colerdieg to Baudelaire is jarring. I think something may be lost in the translation from the original French, because the French rhymes, and rhyme always softens the tone of a piece - whether or not the words are explicit.

Incidentally, I found out that Baudelaire regularly dyed his hair green -a rebel in all senses.
